How To Allow htaccess/hypertext_access Override In Apache


Allow htaccess/hypertext_access override in Apache



If you want to enable htaccess override then small change is required in the Apache configuration file. 

htaccess override is disable by default in apache.


First, Backup the Apache configuration("http.conf") file with having extension as http.conf.backup in the same working directory. In any case we make mistake we can use to restore our default setting.


1) Ubuntu:


  • Backup the apache2 configuration file located in the "sites-available" directory.
  • Open the apache2 configuration file in your favourite editor and look for the string "AllowOverride".
  • Now we have to make some minor changes HERE 
  • If found, change it from "AllowOverride None" to "AllowOverride All".
  • Edit & Save the Apache configuration(http.conf) file and restart Apache web service.



2) CentOS/RHEL:


  • Make sure file is backed up successfully. then proceed to next step
  • Open the "http.conf" configuration file in the editor and search for the string "AllowOverride".
  • Now we have to make some minor changes HERE 
  • Change it from "AllowOverride None" to "AllowOverride All".
  • Edit & Save the Apache configuration(http.conf) file and restart Apache web service.
